Udugu Sunday

Udugu Sunday

Udugu-Sunday-collage_for-website-event_crop.jpg

Udugu means "companionship" in Swahili. The word expresses equality, mutual support, and a commitment to walking together. In this spirit, we will lift up our new sister church in Tanzania, and reflect on our stewardship through the ministry of Advent and the global Lutheran Church.

Worship | 9am & 11am in English, 12:30pm in Spanish

Get ready for Tanzanian-style worship! Spoiler: It includes a lot of Lutheran hymns. Tanzanian Lutherans are Lutherans, and sing from the same hymnal we do, translated into their own language, Swahili.

One unique element of Tanzanian worship we'll do is an offering of food for the community. Bring non-perishables with you to participate in this offering. In Tanzanian communities, this offering of actual food reflects the needs of the community. (Are we really so different, though, with our Food Pantry and Community Lunch?)

Pastor Margay Whitlock, an Advent member who happens to also be a pastor, will preach on her own experience in Tanzania.

Learn about our new Sister Congregation | 10-11am

Learn more about our new sister church in Tanzania from members of our Tanzania Committee. The presentation and discussion will take place downstairs, in the back half of the Community Hall.

Multicultural Thanksgiving Meal | 12pm

To close the day, join us for a multicultural Thanksgiving Meal with our whole community, including cuisine from Tanzania and El Salvador. Gathered around the table, we'll give thanks for diversity and celebrate that we are all one in Christ! Bring a Thanksgiving dish that represents your culture or tradition.

Stewardship

We'll also take this Sunday to give thanks for all the ways God has blessed us, and reflect on our practice of stewardship through Advent and the broader Lutheran Church.
