Faith Development Classes | Lutheran Counseling Center

Advent offers a robust program of faith-related education in a context of friendship and hospitality.  Weekly adult study time is on Sunday mornings between services, 10-10:45am.  In addition, studies are also offered during the week, usually on Tuesday evenings.

Sunday Studies at 10am

    Fruit of the Spirit - July 13, 20, August 3, 10, 17
Kelly Kandler will lead this 5-week series on the Fruits of the Spirit as described in Galatians 5: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-Control. How does the Bible define these spiritual fruits and how can we learn to live them out every day?

    The Lutheran Course - September 7, 14, 28
The Adult Ed group dipped its toes into The Lutheran Course at the beginning of the summer and enjoyed the discussion based on the DVD presentations. You’ll be surprised how fresh the presentations are. Led by Pastor Sudbrock.

Special Discussions Following The 11am Service:
    ELCA Statement on Human Sexuality
    - Sept 7 and 14
The Task Force for our church body's studies on sexuality has produced a new draft statement on human sexuality which is to be discussed between now and November, revised in light of the discussions, and presented to the 2009 assembly of this church for adoption. There are some excellent statements on creation, relationships, protecting children, etc. Persons with concern for how this church will define marriage have suggested important changes to the document.

Advent has ordered copies of the draft statement which will be made available in advance of the discussions. I would then hope that members will plan to attend the presentations made by representatives of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America here at Advent on Saturday, September 20th. Identical presentations will be made at 9:30am and 1pm. Advent is the only location in the synod where this will be happening.

One may also access the draft statement at the ELCA.org website and respond directly to the committee. Social Statements are not binding, but they guide our denomination internally and in our approach to issues in the public square. Pastor Sudbrock will lead the discussions.

Mission Talk: International AIDS Conference - Sept 21
Mary Button will share her experiences as a faith-based delegate at the world's largest human rights conference. This August, 25,000 aid workers, policy analysts, doctors, scientists and activists met in Mexico City to share advances and setbacks in the struggle against the spread of AIDS.

We are always looking for suggestions for study topics. Please let Pastor Sudbrock know if you have a topic that you would like to pursue.

Evening Bible Studies

Read the Bible in One Year
    Saturdays, 9:30am beginning February 9
This group will meet twice per month to discuss what we are learning as we read through the entire Bible together in one calendar year. Our resource is the 'One Year Bible Study' by Tyndale Press. The group will meet at the home of Stacey Winder on W. 49th Street.

Midweek Bible Studies

A short service and Bible study is held each Wednesday at 12 noon, led by our seminarian, Vicar Stephanie Kershner. All are welcome to attend. The service and study last one hour.

Faith Development Classes
Advent offers a program twice a year for adults who wish to learn more about the Christian faith and Lutheran theology.  We call this program "Seekers Classes."  We use the word "Seekers" because that is what all of us are.  We are all seekers who are moving through life together, learning and growing in different ways at every juncture.

The Seekers Classes consist of two or three sessions which cover the following:
  1. An overview of the Old and New Testaments of the Scripture.  This session covers the creation story, the covenant God made with Abraham and Sarah, the exodus story, and the major and minor prophets from the Hebrew scriptures.  In addition, this session explores the coming of Jesus as the fulfillment of the covenant made with Abraham and Sarah.
  2. The major themes in Lutheran theology.  This session includes looking at Luther's doctrine of justification by grace through faith alone, the priesthood of all believers, the theology of the two sacraments of Baptism and Communion (the two sacraments celebrated in the Protestant tradition), and how Lutherans view the saints.
  3. How Lutheranism differs from other Christian traditions.  This session examines how Lutheranism differs from other traditions along the spectrum from Roman Catholicism to Quakerism.  In addition, this session examines how Lutheranism differs from fundamentalist traditions and the free-church movements, especially the Pentecostalism and "decision" theologies.
If you wish to be part of a Seekers program at Advent, please contact  Pastor Brown at the church office (212-665-2504) or pastor@adventnyc.org.

We hope to see you very soon!
